Rocky Mountain Power Nest Rebate and Solar

Rebates can be a bit of a pain, but when you take advantage of them they can save you quite a bit. Rocky Mountain Power has its own rebate program called Wattsmart.

Wattsmart and the Thermostat Rebate

The Wattsmart incentive program at Rocky Mountain Power is meant to encourage energy conservation. Customers are rewarded for upgrading appliances or implementing energy efficient practices.

How the Wattsmart Program Works

This program includes starter kits, weatherization, and energy reports. They also have discounts, incentives, and utility-run renewable programs. The best part about this program is that you are incentivized for making changes that decrease your energy bill, which compounds the savings you can get with solar power in Utah.

The Nest Rebate at Rocky Mountain Power

The Nest is one of the smart thermostats Rocky Mountain Power will reimburse you for. In Utah, they give a $50 rebate for approved smart thermostats.

As of March 2019, the EcoBee and Nest thermostats were the only brands on the qualified products list. Customers need to make sure the brand and model of smart thermostat is on the list at the time of purchase to be eligible for the incentives.

To qualify for the rebate you need to send in a request for the incentive and a receipt or confirmation e-mail. You also need to already live in the home for which you are purchasing the thermostat. If you don’t want to deal with the rebate you can get an instant rebate when you purchase it on the Nest website.

Nest also qualifies for the Dominion Energy rebate. You, however, can’t use more than two incentives or coupons per thermostat. You will have to determine whether these rebates or a coupon would be better.

How Nest Interacts With Solar

Because both solar and Nest thermostats help you save energy, it makes sense that they would pair well together. First, let’s take a look at how the Nest smart thermostat works. Then, we can determine the role of photovoltaics and Utah residential solar power play in this Symbiotic relationship.

Learning How the Nest Thermostat Works

Nest has two different smart thermostats. The first is the Nest Learning Thermostat and then there is the Nest Thermostat E.

How the Nest Learning Thermostat Works

The Nest Learning Thermostat acclimates to your preferred settings. After installing the thermostat you change the temperature as you see fit. After a week of adjusting the thermostat, it will program itself.

You can control the thermostats from your phone for easy accessibility from anywhere. It can also sense if you are at home through the app and go into an “eco mode” to help you save even more money.

If you want to save money with your thermostat it will show you when you used more or less energy. You can then choose to adjust the temperature to conserve more energy.

Functions of the Nest Thermostat E

At half the price, the Nest Thermostat E is still a pretty good deal. It allows you to monitor and adjust your temperature settings from anywhere. You can also have it set to turn itself down when you leave the house.

It allows you to save more with its e-savings feature. It notifies you of an energy conserving temperature for your home with a green leaf icon.

Unlike the Learning Nest, there are fewer sensors and less aesthetic options. The Nest Thermostat E is also compatible with less heating and cooling systems.

Using the Nest Thermostat with Utah Residential Solar

One of the main selling points of Utah Residential Solar is the savings and returns of solar. Solar fist saves you from utility rate increases. You then start saving even more when the system is paid off.

When you start using solar with Nest you are able to increase your savings. First, you save 10 to 15 percent on your heating and cooling expenses. Then, you continue to save by producing most or all of the energy you consume.

Optimize Your Solar Experience With the Nest Thermostat

If all you did was purchase the equipment and then go on as normal you would save quite a bit. However, if you would like to save even more it only takes a couple of minor adjustments.

How the Nest Thermostat Optimizes Solar for Utahans

Net metering is one of the most attractive solar metering policies. Many utilities are trying to make solar less attractive by implementing unattractive solar metering policies.

These metering policies often charge/pay customers more for energy during times of high demand. The problem is that people are more likely to be home using power when the sun isn’t out.

This is why planning high energy activities during the day when the sun is out works to your benefit. You aren’t charged the higher rate when you run the dishwasher during the day. In fact, you aren’t charged anything at all because your solar production covers it.

Being more conscientious of when you are running the heater or air conditioning has the same impact. You don’t have to use as much energy to maintain temperature as you do to obtain it.

By setting your thermostat to start heating or cooling your home when the sun is out you won’t have to spend as much. You can keep your home at a comfortable level without the price tag that often comes with it.

Why Go Solar Group Encourages Nest Thermostats in Tandem with Utah Solar Panels

Go Solar Group encourages Nest Thermostats because they are one of the best ways to compound Utah solar savings. And they work with most 24-volt heating and cooling systems.

We believe technology that helps you save money is worth the investment. Which is why Go Solar Group will install a Nest thermostat with the purchase of a solar array.

They provided great customer service all along the way. The only complaint we have is that it took our city nearly two months to approve our permit to get this done. So keep that in mind, especially if you are trying to get it done by year end.
