Rebates for San Antonio residents interested in solar can help make solar an affordable option for people that want clean energy. In Texas, there aren’t any state rebates so you only have federal and utility rebates to help you out. If you have a regulated utility that doesn’t want to support solar then getting an array will be an uphill battle. CPS is an advocate of solar and has some pretty impressive solar programs.
CPS Solar Rebate Caps
CPS has a rebate program that they have supported for the past five years. This Program started out with tranche 1. Tranche 1 offered solar customers up to $1.20 per watt of energy there system could produce.
Each year a new cap and customer incentives get determined. The 2017 Tranche 4 ran out of funding in March of 2018. But CPS continues their support of customer solar generation.
2018 Launch Of CPS Tranche 5 Solar Rebate
In April 2018 Tranche 5 was launched with a 15 million dollar cap. CPS customers can get up to $0.60 per watt if they use an approved local installer.
Before you could receive up to $0.10 per watt extra if you had both a local inverter and panels installed. In the new tranche, CPS has changed this incentive. Now, you only need approved local panels to qualify for an extra $0.10 per watt. With this new round of rebates has come a new possible requirement. CPS Energy has proposed that all CPS solar rooftop systems have two smart meters.
CPS Energy Smart Meters
The New CPS smart meters are part of CPS Energy’s smart grid program that they have rolled out. Since 2014 CPS has been converting customer analog meters to smart meters. CPS installs smart meters at no cost to the customer. Unfortunately, there are some downfalls to smart meters. Two of which are that they don’t last as long and they use energy to run.
Each smart meter has constant communication between the meter, customer, and CPS. CPS Energy feels that having smart meters will help them prevent long power outages. They also cut the cost of reading meters. Smart meters also allow customers to see their day to day power usage. These meters, however, will not show you where that power is being drawn from.
If you would like to know what is drawing power, you will need a home energy measurement system. CPS Energy claims that smart meters will help reduce grid maintenance. As of right now, all CPS customers can pay to have their smart meter exchanged back to the analog meter. Analog metered customers also pay a monthly fee. This covers the cost of having someone come out to their location and read the meter.
CPS Free Solar Panels: Solar Host SA
CPS has a solar hosting program which allows individuals to enjoy solar. This program credits customers $0.03 per watt of power produced from the panels installed. This discount decreases the customer’s monthly power bill by 20 to 30 percent. It also gives others the option to purchase solar power generated from the array you are hosting.
Difference Between Solar Hosting And a Solar Purchase
When you purchase a solar array you are paying for your power upfront at a discounted rate. If your system is the accurate size you should only have a monthly connection fee when your panels get paid off. Because solar arrays save customers thousands of dollars this purchase is a no-brainer.
A CPS hosted system isn’t owned by you and therefore your power isn’t as cheap as it would have been had you purchased it. Unlike a purchased system you will pay for discounted power the entire time the panels are on your roof. This power will also have fluctuating rates out of your control.
If you decide to move it is hassle-free, but the panels will not increase the price of your home because you don’t own them. The new owner will get the same discount you got on their energy bill until the 20-year program is complete.
Can You Enroll In CPS Energy’s Solar Hosting Program?
There is a cap to this program and it currently is at its limit. Because this is a pilot program there isn’t a specified date as to when or if this program will reopen.
